New Layout!

I've finally rolled out something I've been tinkering with for the last couple of days: a spiffy new blog layout! I thought with al the webOS talk recently it'd be funny to remodel my blog to resemble that certain desktop OS we love to hate. So, um, I did. Two other reasons for trying for a desktop-like layout:

  • my sidebars had really gotten out of hand. I displayed so much information on my online and offline activities that it all added up to information overload and cluttered up the place. Now you can open something from the menu that you actually WANT to see. Or not.
  • Y'all are already ingrained with the WIMP paradigm, so it should be easy to use.
To get it working within the constraints of what blogger and other free webservices offer only added to the challenge, and despite some small remaining issues I am quite happy with the result. I'll slowly be adding additional content and menus (and fixing up bugs) over the next few weeks, and sprucing up the rather basic content CSS. For now I'm just happy the damn thing is up and works in IE and firefox (on windows anyway), and konqueror/mozilla/firefox on linux. If you're on a mac I'd be interested to know if the page rendered well in whatever browser you use.

Because my script-fu is weak I used a lot of neat script snippets and CSS from BrainJar, a great resource; the window and menu code is lightweight and elegant javascript and CSS with only one image used (for the min/max/close button). Notepad (well, Crimson Editor really, think free notepad clone on steroids) and the Gimp were used to stick it all together. I'm sure it breaks all kinds of HTML and CSS and javascript conventions but you know what: bite me.

UPDATE: added a 'weboffice' menu with some links to kickass web applications, and an 'accessories' menu that has some neato online utilities. And fixed some bugs, and introduced others.

Love the look.
Simple.
Clean.
Graphically pleasing.

The problem on my end (living in the Dark Ages with dial-up in a third world country with telephone wires that are as old as the hills) is that your page took 10 minutes to upload, even early in the morning before the lines get clogged.

wow, dial-up! I know what country I won't be visiting :P

The page source is not too heavy, I hope most of it is stuck in your cache now so next time it'll load quicker.
As an alternative try this light version (it's really my RSS feed but it has browser-friendly formatting).

I'll see if I can shave off some fluff.

egOS 1.0 is starting up... please wait.

egOS 1.0 is starting up... please wait.

egOS 1.0 is starting up... please wait.

loading.....loading.... loading.....

4 minutes, on this end of the world, in this hemisphere, on dialup, to load.

It's worth the wait, though. :P

try... the... light... version... :P

I know it is a bitch to load, but a) did I mention the light version b) my content is available in RSS c) I spent waaaay to much time on building it, so you'll be looking at it for a while.

I tried the light version, but comments aren't enabled. :-( Is there any way to access comments via the light version? Perhaps I'm missing something, being a newbie techie?

I really like the layout and especially the organization: access to 43 things, etc...

It's no problem. Really. I just do my nails while I wait. :P

Ach, forgot about the comments! No, I don't think there's a way to comment via suprglu.

And think of how good your nails are going to look! :P
